On August 3, 2017, CNBC listed officials whom McCabe and other law-enforcement officials “have privately believed are potential witnesses.” The named set is McCabe; Jim Rybicki; James Baker; David Bowditch; and “Carl Ghattas, the head of the FBI’s national security division, and a legal adviser to McCabe.” That last comma is CNBC’s. Just the News, citing McCabe’s memos, reports a meeting in Rosenstein’s office with Rosenstein, Mueller, Aaron Zebley, “and FBI executive assistant director Carl Ghattas (who attended at McCabe’s request).” That parenthetical is McCabe’s memo as Just the News printed it. Attendance is not a handshake and not a crime.
The July 2018 exit is already in the file. Duke and UNLV biographies state he “retired from the FBI in July 2018.” The Washington Examiner and New York Post, citing the Journal, listed him as “departing for corporate jobs.” See July 2018: He Left the Bureau.
